Smart Voice Recognition App Wave Wins Open Data Challenge in Austria

Wave, the city guide app for Vienna with smart voice recognition was rewarded once again. Following its success in winning the Seamless Cities App Camp 2014 and the ESA App Challenge 2015, the Austrian startup took the victory in the Open Data Challenge of the Austrian Federal Chancellery, according to the motto: "Data seeking ideas, ideas seeking data". Wave founder Patrick Wolowicz was awarded as best submission in the categories "solutions" and "traffic". To top it off, Wave also won the special prize "data4people - Smart Vienna Data", sponsored by Tieto. These prizes are endowed with EUR 2,000 each.

This year's Open Data Challenge was a new edition of the 2013 "apps4austria" competition and specifically addressed developers, students, pupils and administrative organisations.

The expert jury was especially convinced by Wave's intuitive usability that functions through smart voice recognition. In addition to providing relevant information to visitors of a city, the app has been designed for the use by visually impaired people and is steadily increasing accessibility.

Winning another award represents a big step for Patrick Wolowicz (on the far left of the photo) in the further business development of the innovative iOS voice assistant application. To provide useful answers, Wave relies on multi-source, timely data. In addition to wide-ranging information of a customised smart city guide through open data sources, Wave is continuously working on integrating even more Earth observation satellite data. The app uses data from the European Copernicus programme such as water temperature, UV index, ozone and pollen levels. Currently, the company is working on a new feature, the calculation of bike routes for Vienna.
