EC EU Space Data for new Business Applications Challenge

The EC EU Space Data for new Business Applications Challenge is looking for solutions that have the potential to stimulate new commercial incentives in “established” markets and open up business opportunities to startups.

Finalists

Stay tuned! One of these finalists will become the EC EU Space Data for new Business Applications Challenge winner!

Cartometrics AI Platform: Empowering Small EO Businesses to Serve a Large Market
Complex problems require a variety of specialised algorithms that only very large companies can deliver. Small EO businesses have highly specialised algorithms, but not enough diversity to solve such problems. Cartometrics.ai is a one-stop cloud platform for finding and building Earth observation solutions. Its architecture combines Copernicus data with machine learning algorithms, which can be expanded to use multiple advanced solutions in line with each customer’s particular needs. In the Cartometrics marketplace, EO businesses can access a wide range of qualified EO algorithms provided by the platform’s network of partners.

Space.Science: A One-Stop Shop for Customised EO Solutions
Space.Science maximises the potential of Earth observation data by providing an all-in-one platform for EO data users. It facilitates easy access to EO information and enables seamless integration with users’ internal data. The platform also provides custom insights and correlations that are not visible from a particular data source alone. Meanwhile, Space.Science includes instant analytics and visualisations based on AI algorithms, which aids decision-making and extended data analysis. By integrating industry-specific, value-added services from third parties, it aims to offer enhanced customisability and deliver personalised solutions according to customers’ needs.

Vialone: Learn More About Your Organic Meal!
The Vialone service provides objective information from satellite and in-situ sensors on rice paddy fields to assess whether the recorded data match the organic production claims filed by the producer. Recently, cases of traditional rice being fraudulently sold as organic have been discovered. These incidents damage both the genuine producers and the consumers and call for technological solutions to provide independent evidence of organic claims. Vialone combines data from the Sentinel-1, -2, and -3 satellites and local sensors, compares the sensed variables with the expected features of organic crops based on the declared agronomic technique, and factors in possible modifications due to weather and climate factors. Constant monitoring of rice paddy fields helps farmers take care of their delicate organic crops, and the information collected also enhances traceability and supports genuine organic certification.

The Challenge

It becomes increasingly clear that the use of EU Space data is almost unlimited, not only thanks to the high level of quality and accessibility of data, but also due to the rapid development of new technologies such as AI, data analytics or cloud computing that support the exploitation of these data.  Thus, the penetration of space data through innovative applications into markets regarded as established is very promising. Against this background, this challenge encourages the submission of innovative proposals based on EU Space data that have the potential to open up new business opportunities for startups.

The key requirement is that the solutions demonstrate the “added-value” in the use of Copernicus and Galileo/EGNOS data for their development and the expected market impact.

Submissions are welcome in any application field, such as:

  • Insurance
  • Health
  • Leisure and Sport
  • Trade
  • Construction

The EC EU Space Data for new Business Applications Challenge aims at stimulating new business models and market perspectives for startups by offering innovative solutions to customers and consumers. The proposals shall prove technological feasibility.
